Why the Word 'Why' is Bad!

As a Certified Career Coach (CCC), it is my job to help today's job seekers discover their career potential, gain the confidence they need to succeed and teach them how to eliminate negative behaviors and overcome those obstacles that have prevented them from having the career they want and truly deserve. One way we can do this is to first start with eliminating the word 'why' from our everyday vocabulary.

When individuals come to me for career coaching, they are, for the most part, frustrated, confused, discouraged and sometimes angry.  I need to find out what is fueling these feelings and then create a plan to help eliminate any negative thought patterns.  It should be understood that looking for a career in today's job market can be overwhelming and become a part-time job in itself.  Let's look at why we need to eliminate the word 'why' from our vocabulary when job hunting.

"Why did I not get the interview?", "Why was he/she chosen over me?", "Why is my resume not working?".  As you can see, these questions have a very negative overtone and they all ask the question 'why'.  Let's look at another way we could ask these questions with a more positive spin to it:
  • "What do I need to do to get the interview next time?"
  • "What did he/she do that allowed them to get hired before me?"
  • "What do I need on my resume to get noticed?"
As you can see, by replacing the word 'why' with 'what' we have created a positive thought pattern. By eliminating negative words from our vocabulary, we start to see more positive results, that can be used in both our personal and professional life.   The next time you find yourself using the word 'why', stop and replace it with 'what' or 'how'.  Who knew by chaning one word in our vocabulary, we can begin bringing positive energy into our lives.
